Grottaglie, a Southern Italian city known for its ceramics.

The quarries in the area provide the necessary materials for the ceramic production in Grottaglie. As a visitor, you have the possibility to walk into the ateliers of the artisans and purchase their wares. However, better to go in the evening (after 5), as Italians take their 2-5 nap (or say tv time?) pretty serious.

We happened to be there during exactly those hours, and spent them wandering the tiny pastel streets of the historical centre. We also searched for the castle, but this was not really worth it, as there is only a tiny area you can visit. It does house a ceramic museum, and the chances are you’ll be the only visitors – we were the only tourists in town.
